7 Fresh Ways to Figure Out What to Do With Your Life

Jumping straight into clichés, the world is full of possibilities, even filled with them. On second thought there are just too many of them, no wonder not a lot of people know what to do with their lives. And to add insult to injury you have all these people working on their careers, improving themselves all the while you are left behind without any clue what to do.

According to the Happiness Report, employed people are on 20-30% more satisfied with their life than unemployed ones, and even more, people have an innate desire to be involved in constant activities.

So, if you are reading this article, then it most definitely means that you looking for a job.

Therefore, I won’t stall any further and give you 7 tips on how to figure out what you want to do for a career!

1. Stop “I don’t know what to do with my life” moaning

Firstly, it is important to note the way we approach things defines how we see and evaluate them. For example, if you start your day thinking: “Oh, another day of being bored and unproductive”, then it’ll be exactly like that. Why? Because all humans have a desire to be right and a tendency to impose our will on the reality and thusly we change the world to meet our expectations. This is a very powerful human feature and a measly positive attitude can change our lives.

So stop saying: “I don’t know what to do”, and start saying “I want to know what I can and could do!”

2. Find your dream job

The easy thing to say, but not an easy thing to do. In my experience, people approach this task incorrectly. They take on too many things at once. In reality, this is just a fun mental exercise: you don’t worry your head with questions like “What job would I fit?” or “What career should I pursue?” but rather just imagine.

Imagine your perfect field of work, where you would be content and happy, don’t be afraid to drift away and explore your mind. Imagine your perfect workday and workplace. Maybe you’d like to work for a small company with a sweet company culture, or maybe you want a more competitive environment? Find the answers within your mind and then act accordingly.

3. Approach choosing a career path analytically

If you are not satisfied with the answers or couldn’t pin them down, then it’s time to stop daydreaming and to write something down.

What are we writing down? Not much, only our hopes and dreams. Of course, fantasizing is fun, but it doesn’t get you very far. It doesn’t until you put down your thoughts on paper. Paraphrasing my old psychology professor: “If you can verbalize – it is possible”.

Answer these questions: “What work inspires me?”, “What are my requirements?”, and “What are my deal-breakers?”. When you have a set list of your willing, needs, and desires, just cross-reference it with various jobs and see if something fits. A piece of cake, right?

4. Ask yourself “What job would I be good at?”

Not satisfied with the results or don’t think you can do the job? Well, then there’s an easy solution: you should create a list again but this time of your own skills and characteristics.

Yes, it can be hard evaluating yourself, especially after imagining your perfect job and workplace, however, it is a must. All of us possess some certain aspects that make us unique and more importantly suitable for a particular set of jobs. Surely, with an increasing amount of passion and dedication you can take up and be good at almost any job you want, but it’s easier succeeding at a job to which you are already predisposed. I recommend creating a list of your technical skills and discovering your personal strengths and weaknesses by completing a Mayer-Briggs test online and again cross-referencing.

5. Find your true calling in the most unexpected places

If you’re one of those people who acts first and thinks later, then all of this theorizing on “how to pick a career” is not very effective at all. Some people prefer to explore ideas while others - the world, what is completely normal. In your case, I would encourage you to go out and get a part-time job or an internship, take up some courses or classes, as in our world, you never know when or where you might get lucky. Just look at the statistics of a career change.

6. Get some professional career help

There are moments in everyone’s lives, where have no idea what to do, where to go and why bother at all. For these type of moments, we have other professionals to help. 7. Don’t worry about feeling stuck
